Thesis Show: Ang Bahay ng Aking Kabataan (The House of My Youth)
Artist Statement (Click to Show/Hide)
I am an American immigrant from the Philippines, where I first developed a passion for video games, drawing, and animation—interests that have shaped my artistic journey. Now, I primarily work with videography and photography to explore my creative ideas.
The central theme of my work is immersion in Filipino culture, showcasing the daily lives and identities of people in the Philippines. My art examines both their beauty and their struggles. For this project, I created miniature models of traditional Filipino houses and stores, including a computer shop where I worked to support myself, beginning at age 15. This hands-on approach allowed me to connect more deeply with my subject. The accompanying cinemagraphs bring a time-based perspective of the models that challenges viewers to consider what is real and not. Additionally, I have incorporated photographic portraits of three Filipino women from the local community. Since I was raised by a single mother, I chose to focus on capturing images of hard-working women, like those that surrounded me during my youth.
Through this project, I share my experience growing up in an impoverished community before immigrating to the U.S. as a young adult. I hope to evoke nostalgia and connection, allowing my audience to reflect on their own experiences with simplicity, hardship, childhood, and home, while developing a deeper appreciation for the Filipino culture. Ultimately, I aim to foster cultural understanding and inspire conversations that highlight the common threads that unite us all. Through my art, I want to celebrate Filipino heritage and the beauty of my native culture.
